Investigating the Effect of Low and Moderate Acute Resistance Exercises on the Cognitive Flexibility of the Elderly who are above 60 Years Old

Abstract

 
Background &Purpose: Cognitive flexibility is a type of executive function that shows the individual's ability to shift their attention between different tasks and is affected by the aging process. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effect of acute resistance training with low to moderate intensity on the cognitive flexibility of older adults, aged 60 and above.
Methodology: 40 healthy older were purposefully selected and randomly assigned into experimental (n=20) and control groups (n=20). Cognitive flexibility was assessed by the more-odd task, which was conducted in the following three stages: before intervention, 15 minutes, and 180 minutes after intervention. Strength training for the experimental group was performed with low (40% -10RM) and moderate intensity (70% -10RM). The data was analyzed by a 2 × 3 × 2 repeated measures ANOVA at a significance level of 0.05.
Results: The results of the study showed that acute resistance training had a significant effect on the response time, response accuracy and shifting index of the more-odd task in the older adults (p <0.05). In addition, the results showed that gender and exercise intensity had no significant impact on the effect of resistance training on inhabitation control (P> 0.05), while the more-odd task which was conducted some time after resistance training had a significant effect on the test results (p <0/05).
Conclusion: A session of both moderate and low acute resistance training can improve the cognitive flexibility of older adults. Therefore, it is recommended that these exercises be used to improve the cognitive flexibility of the older adults and to prevent their cognitive decline.
