Effect of generic and non-generic feedback on self-efficacy, sport motivation and Movement Pattern Acquisition in Adults

Abstract

Background & Purpose: Feedback information with inducing different conceptions of ability is in two generic (inherent ability) and non-generic (changeability of ability by effort) forms. Since the effects of these forms on self-efficacy, sport motivation and motor performance in adults not studied, therefore, the aim of this study was determination of the influence of generic versus non-generic feedback on adults' motivation, self-efficacy and motor performance.
Methodology: Participants were novice 45 that after one session of dart throwing instruction and contribution in pre-test, divided to three matched groups: generic feedback and non-genic feedback and control. Then, they practiced dart-throwing skill for six sessions. Participants completed the Sport Motivation Scale (SMS-6) and dart throwing self-efficacy questionnaire in post-test after an intervention period.
Results: The findings revealed that non-generic feedback improved Performance, internal motivation and self-efficacy than the generic feedback and control groups.
Conclusion: Non-generic feedback implies the concept of flexible and achievable skill, and can promote a more positive reaction than generic feedback.
