Abstract

Stereotypes are general and inflexible ideas that take place in the human mind and are used in judgments that can affect a person's perception, abilities and performance. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of gender stereotypes on learning of soccer movement skill in female students. Participants of this semi-experimental and field research were 30 female students with an average age of M=12±0.43 that were randomly assigned to two groups: stereotype threat or negative stereotypes and stereotype lift or positive stereotypes. The task was required participants to perform low kicks at a squared target attached to a wall. Accuracy scores were analyzed in analysis of variance with repeated measures. The results showed that both experimental groups obtained similar accuracy scores in the task acquisition process. But in the stage of induction of gender stereotypes and retention test, the positive stereotypes group got better results. It seems that the use of various stereotyped sentences has an effect on a person's perception, motor performance, learning and motivation.
