The Effect of Virtual physical activity on the COVID-19 Patients’ Quality of Life during Home Quarantine

Abstract

Regarding that COVID-19 is a new and unknown disease and in recent months after its outbreak, no effective treatment and vaccine has been found for this disease yet, the present study aims to investigate the effect of virtual physical activity on the quality of life of patients. COVID-19 is under house quarantine.

Methodology

The population of the present quasi-experimental study consisted of 120 patients referred to Valiasr Hospital in Tabriz with a positive Covid-19 test result who did not need to be hospitalized by a specialist, required be home quarantined for at least 14 days to recover. Then the subjects were selected via the random and convenience sampling methods and divided in two experimental (22 subjects) group with age mean and standard deviation of 38.1±10.37 years old, and control (24 subjects) group with age mean and standard deviation of 40.1±9.6 years old. Then the groups were homogenized as much as possible in terms of age, sex, weight and the disease symptoms. The Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) was employed to measure the quality of life. The experimental group also participated in fourteen 30-to-60-minute sessions of virtual exercises through WhatsApp. Finally, to investigate the possible differences between the studied groups, inferential t-test and independent t-test were used at a significance level of 0.05.

Results

The results indicated a significant effect of virtual sports exercises on the increase in general health and physical performance, fatigue or vitality; and mental health, and reduction in the limitations of role-playing for emotional reasons and physical pain. However, no significant difference was observed in the variables of role limitations due to physical reasons and social functioning.



Conclusion

result of abuse is that regular physical activity through physiological, hormonal and cognitive mechanisms may increase the quality of life factors too much and increase mental and physical health.
