The relationship between emotional intelligence and motivational climate with competitive anxiety of martial artists

Abstract

Background&Purpose: In sports scenes, the psychological dimension of athletes and the effect of psychological variables on their performance is important. In this regard, the purpose of this article is to investigate the relationship of emotional intelligence and motivational climate with the competitive anxiety of martial athletes of Guilan. Methodology: The statistical population of the present study consisted of male athletes of karate and kickboxing in Guilan province with a number of approximately 9,000 people and 368 of whom were selected for the study through simple random sampling. To collect the data, standard questionnaires of emotional intelligence, competitive anxiety, and the motivational climate and to examine the hypotheses, structural equations modeling was used. Results: The results showed that among the dimensions of emotional intelligence, evaluation, and expression of emotion and utilization of emotion affect state anxiety and regulation of emotion and emotion utilization affect the trait anxiety athletes. The task-based climate also has an effect on state anxiety and the ego-based climate affects the trait anxiety of them. Conclusion: Therefore, if an athlete is skilled in evaluating and controlling his emotions and evaluating other's emotions, he can better control his anxiety in stressful situations. Also, if he feels that the results of his performance are important, he may experience state anxiety in a competitive situation, and if the motivational climate is ego-based, the trait anxiety of the athlete increases; because the athlete in this situation, from his point of view, considers his position is sensitive. As a result, to control competitive anxiety, athletes' emotional intelligence skills should be strengthened, and it is better to examine the behavior of coaches and others in establishing an appropriate motivational climate.
