The effect of local and developmental games on emotional awareness of children

Abstract

Objective: Play is an essential educational tool for nurturing children's cognitive, physical, emotional, and social capacities. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of local and developmental games on emotional awareness of children.

Methodology: In this semi-experimental research, the statistical population of this research was made up of 9-11-year-old students of Dehgolan city, 28 of them were selected non-randomly and available as a sample and randomly in the form of two groups of local games (N=14) and developmental games (N=14) were distributed. Both groups played the selected games for 6 weeks and three sessions every week. Rief (2008) questionnaire was used to measure emotional awareness before and after the research intervention. The Shapiro-Wilk test was used to determine the normality of the data related to the research variables. Independent t-test was used to analyze the data and test the research hypotheses. All statistical analyzes were performed at the alpha level of 0.05 using SPSS version 19 software.

Results: The results of the present study showed that local and developmental games on emotional awareness with the subscales of distinguishing emotions, expressing emotions, paying attention to the emotions of others, body awareness, and analyzing emotions were significantly effective and led to an increase in Children's emotional awareness has increased (P≤0.05).

Conclusion: The results of the present study remind the education professionals that developmental and local games can be used as a suitable intervention method to improve and increase emotional awareness of children.
