Abstract

Background & Purpose: Very little research has been based on citation analysis of research related to the elderly. In order to provide an overview of the research process, the present study was conducted with the aim of citation analysis of geriatric research in Iranian journals of physical education (scientific-research and scientific-promotional).

Methodology: This research is a quantitative type with an applied purpose and is based on citation analysis. The statistical population includes all citations in the field of geriatric research resources in Iranian journals of physical education from 1993 to 2022. The tool used is a researcher-made checklist and its content validity was confirmed by 10 professors of sports management and Scientometrics. Data analysis was performed with Excel and Gephi software.

Results: Findings showed that most of the sources are article type with 89.04% and researchers have mostly cited English sources with 83.22%. The half-life of Persian sources was less than English sources and the authors' self-citation rate was 1.25% of the total sources. Most of the articles were written by three authors and the researchers with the degree of assistant professor had the most contributions. In terms of organizational affiliation of authors, it was determined that the University of Tehran has the highest frequency.

Conclusion: Elderly researches have a favorable situation in terms of authorship pattern and reference to reliable sources, but due to the use of old sources and inappropriate co-authorship status, the pattern of information-seeking behavior of researchers should be modified in order to develop knowledge.
